The Office of Wage Standards is the designated agency tasked with administering and enforcing the City’s wage and labor standards under the following ordinances:
- Minimum Wage Ordinance (which includes paid sick leave)
- Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance (also known as Ban-the Box)
- Fair Work Week Ordinance
The OWS is also the administrative agency for the following ordinances:
- Hotel Worker Minimum Wage Ordinance
- Hotel Worker Protections Ordinance
- Freelance Worker Protections Ordinance

The Information and Outreach Section informs businesses and employees about the City’s requirements regarding minimum wage, paid sick leave, and fair hiring practices. This section focuses on creating educational materials, providing training, conducting outreach, and administering on-call personal services contracts for community outreach and other specialized services.

The Investigation and Compliance Section investigates complaints of wage underpayment and alleged violations against sick time and ban-the-box requirements. This section issues findings and assessments of wage and sick time restitution and penalties where applicable.

The Workplace Equity and Opportunity Section informs retail businesses and retail workers about the City’s requirements regarding a fair, predictable work schedule and rest between shifts. This section creates educational materials, provides training, conducts outreach, and administers on-call personal services contracts regarding the Fair Work Week Ordinance (FWWO) and investigates (FWWO) claims.
